Joy Nesbitt – Clown Nose/Black [Singles]

Joy Nesbitt – Clown Nose/Black [Singles]

On a pair of new singles called “Clown Nose” and “Black“, singer Joy Nesbitt mends herself from the lingering affects of a past love affair as well as steps confidently forward in life with her blackness on display. On “Clown Nose“, she sets her self free from any charms that a woman from her past may have held over her. With her rose-colored glasses now set aside, Nesbitt calls out her former bae for being manipulative after deciding to pop up in her life after an uncerimonious breakup. The backing track is an organically flowing, almost acapella-feeling piece that gives the whole thing a kind of unguarded “singing in the shower” feel. If you assume that the singer’s intent is to show how time and distance can bring about healing after a breakup, then you have to give her the award for hitting her target.

Black” is a forward-marching anthem that displays the singer’s sense of self-love and pride in her identity as a black woman in a world where whiteness and masculinity have been held in the highest esteem by so many for so long. Collaborating with an emcee by the name of Bizzy Savant allows Joy to contrast the soaring nature of her performance against a voice that feels more aggressive in its dissidence. But it quickly becomes easy to see that both artists are serving up the same message – just colored with different tones. Nesbitt seems to backup this position when she states “The sentiment that ‘we should live and live long’ leads to an energetic rap verse that contrasts the rest of the track sonically, but not lyrically. The track is minimal, but bold, experimental and groovy, allowing the vocal and lyrical content to shine.” All things considered, both numbers prove to be surprisingly layered over time – especially when you consider the uncluttered impression that they instill when you first listen to them.

Both tunes, as well as the previously released “Waiting Game” and “Echo” are sure to be featured on her forthcoming Atlas Rising album (set to drop on February 19th).
