It’s kinda hard for me to pin down this new “Insomnia” single from Ida Divine – one of my favorite vocalists ever. When I first heard it, it felt like a bittersweet love song where the singer narrated a hidden love affair that seemed passionate but unsettled. For whatever reason, I got the feeling that there was an element of secrecy to the relationship that simmered in the center of the song’s story. But a few repeat listens have helped me to see the song in the light of another sun. In this new light, the song feels like an ode to a beautiful dream – one where the song’s heroine is able to enjoy moments with her fantasy lover without a care in the world. The thing that connects both interpretations is a tinge of sadness that seems to keep one hand on shoulder throughout all the beauty that the song offers. Even when you can’t quite put your finger on it, you can’t avoid feeling the weightiness in Divine’s performance. Her voice is all silk and strength and her songwriting creates a well-layered narrative that reveals new angles the more you dig into it.

“Insomnia” follows the equally soulful singles “More” and “Cyclone” from Ida Divine, who supplied her fans with great music to help us weather the storm of 2020. Hopefully this is the first of more new releases from our favorite diva this year.
