“Father forgive them for me, while I work on myself, forgive them for me.”
Bay Area singer/songwriter Jane Handcock opens “Forgive Them” with the ad-libs and bravado of a rapper. Jane often transitions effortlessly between the flow of a rapper and a singer. Something many attempt to do, however, unlike others Jane does this exceptionally well.
“Forgive Them”, a refrain we’ve heard many times in songs, is different because Jane’s delivery is unconventional and very relatable. The production is borderline boom-bap, and Jane floats above the grittiness of the track to soften it. The lyrics sound personal to Jane; however they encompass what we are all experiencing in our daily lives. If music that tells your story speaks to you, then “Forgive Them” is the perfect introduction to Jane Handcock and her pen game.
“I can’t be around these niggas that ain’t never lose nothing, we think different.”
For those not familiar with Jane’s discography, “Forgive Them” is only the beginning.
