Olawumi – MOODY [LP]

To those that have been through breakups in the past, you know how challenging it is to get back into the swing of things afterward. But that’s precisely what Olawumi did after experiencing a particularly hurtful breakup a few years ago. The New Jersey singer/songwriter has been able to process and express the mix of emotions that have stirred inside her in the years since that heartbreak and has shared it with the world on her debut album MOODY. The album is filled with powerful, emotional ballads that once again reaffirm the idea that music has the power to heal. Ms. Olawumi’s use of her rich, dark alto voice paired with her bittersweet lyrics and melancholy music will definitely draw you in.

Better Off” starts off the album with a wispy guitar melody and simmering low notes from the young beauty. It has all the weight and feeling of that first conversation with your significant other after a heated argument. I swore in time, you’d realize that I’m the one for you (yeah)/ I swore in time, you’d be the one to see me through/When all you do is say I’m wrong/ With everything I do I’m done (?) I take too long”. A real sense of empathy builds between the performer and her audience as she lays all of her cards on the table. The tune Please Don’t Go ( which Olawumi released as the album’s lead single back in spring ) is a slow-burning spire of pleading that feels more like an inner monologue than a conversation. The lyrics may be directed at the man that is breaking her heart but the vocalist’s tender delivery makes it feel more inwardly directed. There are several other heart-rending-yet-artistically-brilliant moments on MOODY, including a slow-grooving brushoff called Hate It, a bluntly confessional number called Situationship, and a revitalizing album closer called “Free“. That final piece serves as a bittersweet celebration of how our leading lady has regained a sense of peace and happiness after all the turmoil – showing us that she has grown stronger with each tear she has shed.

MOODY is the debut full-length album from Olawumi, following the release of her 2020 EP If You Say So.
