Rayana Jay’s new album Last Call is one of her most vibrant and vividly carefree efforts to date. The Bay Area artist’s voice has always had a mellow and calming presence which has always given her work a lovingly innocent charm. Yet her songwriting on this new set pierces through the serenity of her soft soprano in some playfully unrestrained ways. She writes in a direct, unfiltered way about the life and experiences of a self-assured young woman just trying to have a good time and maybe fall in love every now and again – making her all the more relatable to her audience.
Title track “Last Call” lives up to its name as it definitely feels like a night out with friends at a spot with good music and eye-catching wallflowers who just need to get a few drinks in their system before they can loosen up and have fun. On “STFU” Rayana and guest emcee JANE HANDCOCK have a little fun at the expense of those people who don’t know how to read the room and …you know…shut up a little bit. Its wry and funny and just the sort of “why so serious?” moment that many music fans need when they’re listening to soulful music. The same raucous energy makes for another tongue-in-cheek gem called “ATBO” – a quietly riotous club cut that has to be heard to be fully appreciated.
But Last Call also offers up some tender moments when its not basking in the glow of youth. On numbers like “Unfair” (a confessional track where Rayana tells the object of her affection that she is not quite ready to let go of what they have) and “Blame It” (where she writes from the perspective of someone that’s sharing just how hard it is for her to open up to the ones that she loves) we get a glimpse of what life is like for Rayana when the partying has ended and the serious conversations can’t be put off any longer. But overall, this is a fun album that shows a much more frank yet no less fun side of Rayana Jay.
