Brandy Haze – Silhouette, Vol. 2 [EP]

From singer Brandy Haze we receive the second entry in her “Silhouette” EP series with the release of Silhouette, vol. 2 – a set that evokes the end of one romantic relationship and the beginnings of some entirely new and intimate moments.  Flowing more like a continuation of 2021’s Silhouette, this new EP lives up to the hype of its predecessor while still taking things in a somewhat different direction.

The lead song, entitled “Need To Know” is Haze’s response to a past lover who is jealous and unjustifiably paranoid about what the singer is doing now that the two of them have called it quits. If Haze ever felt devastated and upset over the break up it is clear that she now sees it as a great thing. She finds herself enjoying being free from the burden of a relationship and being able to do whatever she wants with her life.

On “Swing My Way,” she entices a potential lover with all the pleasures that he could share with her – just as long as he doesn’t try to play her. The track has the right mix of vixenish confidence from its leading lady and club-leaning energy from the shoulder-rocking beat. With the track “Anxious”, Brandy takes a moment to reflect about a friend who is right on the edge of becoming a lover. As she expresses her positive feelings towards him and her negative feelings after a recent breakup, she also lets him know that she’s more than a little nervous about falling back in love again. In the video for the single, Haze remains the center of attention while withstanding a figurative and literal downpour – creating an enthralling portrait of an absolutely stunning woman that is well worth enduring stormy weather in order to be her man.

On “Sirens” the singer’s laid-back delivery over a sparse quiet-storm instrumental perfectly matches the track’s relaxed mood, in which she sings invitingly to a guy that has her looking forward to falling in love again. This time, however, it’s the love interest who is having trouble opening up to a new love. The fifth and final track of the set, titled “Voodoo”, opens with soft, low-lit chords and Brandy Haze’s sweetly sung vocals. The song soothes the listener into a cozy and dreamlike headspace and allows the album to end on a comforting note.

Overall, Silhouette, vol. 2 is an excellent EP from an indie-soul artist that is deserving of tons of support. It is clear that she has been working very hard in the year that has passed since the release of Silhouette and her progress is evident. With the arrival of this EP, it seems that we may not have to wait too long for a full-length album from the Cali-based beauty.

7/10 – Very Good
This is an album where the reviewer really enjoys the majority of the tracks and still finds it compelling even after multiple listens. Listeners will probably be listening to this album fairly regularly for at least a month or until something the same or better comes along. Even after that, the listener will most likely revisit the album a few times during the year.
