D.Bledsoe – The Rich & Saucy [EP]

With the release of The Rich & Saucy, Richmond, CA-based emcee D. Bledsoe and Bay Area-reppin’ beatmaker NOBL have produced an EP that is both timeless and timely – assembled in a way that feels like you’re listening to someone wise but also relatable. I’ll be the first to admit that the album’s title doesn’t exactly scream “press play for reflection & introspection”. But this piece is filled with lowkey bops that brim with lyrical gems from D. Bledsoe and soulful melodies worthy of the starriest skies on a late-night drive.

The pithy yet poignant album opener “See The World” hits in a way that brings to mind Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson at their most witty and soulful. The words and sounds fall into place at an unrushed pace and propel a swarm of deep thoughts forward over a relatively small amount of time. D.Bledsoe doesn’t spend more than a few lines on a thought before he moves onto another thread – giving the song a beautiful, jazz-poetry feel.

Another album standout is gliding tribute to the supportive lady-love in D’s life called “Nobody”. The song is more than just an ode to his woman’s body, it’s an ode to his woman as a complete person and as someone with more than just a few attributes worth praising. The sweeping chorus and lush production give this song everything that it needs to stand toe to toe with some of your favorite neo-soul numbers.

The EP closes with a sinuous spark of future-funk brilliance called “Make It Happen” which pulls double duty as a mid-tempo, “move ya body” type anthem and an inspirational number that tells the listener “if you see it, you can make it happen!”. D.Bledsoe and NOBL are serious about their craft. This is a labor of love, and it shows.

After only a few minutes into The Rich & Saucy it’s easy to tell that this project isn’t just a couple of guys who put together an EP for the hell of it. This is a fully-realized collection of songs that explores topics as wide as the shores of California and as personal as the artists themselves.
