While listening to “Memory Lane,” from South West London emcee Emil James I found myself looking back over my decades-long relationship with music – the highs, the lows, and all points in-between. Emil sparks this kind of soulful reflection with his lyrics that bounce between back-in-the-day nostalgia to soothing jazz-hop for the modern era. Producer/arranger/beatmaker Sam Ellwood provides the mellow head-nodder of a beat, lacing it with warm jazz-guitar chords and an airtight drum kit. Dope work indeed and an early contender for my favorite song of the spring.
