Sasa Juste – Keys to the Throne [EP]

Sasa Juste‘s new EP, Keys to the Throne, is a sultry and sassy rap album about the Brooklyn emcee’s life as a woman, as an artist, and her ongoing journey to grow into her power. It’s an album that celebrates the self, the feminine, and its power. Over a mix of hard-hitting beats and smooth melodies, Sasa flows through a range of topics, from relationships to taking the reigns over one’s life. Her flow is smooth and creative, and she blends a wealth of musical influences into her raps to create a sound that is both familiar and fresh.

The EP starts off with “Stream of Thought“, a song that stalks out of the speaker like a lioness, with a slow and deliberate beat that builds up to Sasa‘s alluringly raw rhymes. She then moves into “Feelings“, a high-energy, drill-styled number that’s about finding a real one to share your life with and not settling for less in a partner. Guest emcee Connie Diiamond serves as a fiercely rugged counterbalance to Juste‘s smoother delivery on this track, with both ladies delivering tons of “you got yourself a bad bitch” energy. “Throne” adds a lighter, toast-to-the-good-times vibe as Sasa and rapper Mo Dubb revel in the glory of being in a hard-earned but well-deserved position to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Controlstarts to wind the party down with a breezy, island-soul sound where our leading lady grapples with her conflicting urges and desires in a sexy encounter with one lucky dude. The album ends with “My Way” which features a warning to any would-be lover who thinks that he can play games with Sasa‘s heart. The track is a great way to close out the album since it blends the BK lioness’ straight-no-chaser lyrics with a softness and vulnerability that shows us that she has lots of genuine love to give. The whole album is a perfect snapshot of Sasa in her element: fierce, fun, confident, and powerful. As a whole, Keys to the Throne is a solid piece of work that’s full of both style and substance and a great introduction to Sasa Juste‘s talent and personality.
