And while that may apply to every artist at some point in their career, it can hardly be said for the ever-eclectic Suzi Analogue. Analogue’s music is a kaleidoscopic mix of sounds and styles that never feels derivative or predictable and her new single “SHINE NN 2DEEP” is no exception. The first half of the track features an ominously toned mix of hip-hop and electronica with murky synths, gothic vocal samples, a skittering beat that feels like it’s trying to escape its own confines, and a defiant “me against the world” verse from young D.C. rapper NAPPYNAPPA. Suzi sets up a dark and menacing mood with her arrangement – one that slinks along with a slow-burning and glitchy groove. As NAPPYNAPPA‘s verse comes to an end, the second half of the song finds Analogue in full jungle drum & bass mode releasing a sustained and melodic wobble that feels like it could go on forever. The track quickens its pace swiftly, with a sense of urgency arising from each new sonic layer. Stuttering samples of rapper/singer Junglepussy dance around the edges of the beat, providing a visceral and vital feeling to the simmering musical stew that Suzi has cooked up. As the song starts to approach a fevered pace, it starts to fade out and leave the listener longing for more. Tense and exhilarating, “SHINE NN 2DEEP” is a masterful piece that will leave you wanting to go deeper into the rabbit hole that is Suzi Analogue‘s discography.
