Koncept Jack$on is a rapper whose style draws deeply on the technical lyricism of late 90’s New York rap. His complex lyrics and punchy delivery owe much to this influence, as does his fondness for intricate rhyme schemes and bewildering wordplay. His latest album, HTR vol. 1: The Legend of Tawny Tone, features these elements in abundance – but there are also moments when he breaks out of the mold to show off his versatility as both a lyricist and a creator of mind-bending moods. He is at his best when he is at his most technical – his lyrics are sharp and bristling with energy, and his delivery is so sharp that it feels almost physically impossible to keep up with him. His rhymes are often dense but they never feel forced – instead, he uses them as a way of creating tension in the music. Standout tracks on the album include “Cell Funds/Get Well Regime“, “Chamber“, “540 Matrix Drop“, and “Rasta Pasta“.
