Pioneering jazz men Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison team up with Jazz Is Dead head honchos Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad to unveil an amazing new number called “Fire In Detroit” (which would be a great name for this quartet if they decided to form a group). This four-piece collaboration brings together decades of musical experience, blending Ranelin and Harrison’s deep jazz roots with Younge and Muhammad’s hip-hop and soul-steeped production sensibilities. The result is a modern-day soul-jazz classic that sounds like it could have been released in the early ‘70s. Harrison‘s bass clarinet and Ranelin‘s trombone play off each other beautifully, weaving in and out of each other’s lines and filling the gaps between Younge‘s keys and Ali Shaheed‘s bubbling bass notes. This track is an excellent example of how these four seasoned musicians can collaborate and blend styles to create something truly special. Serving as the third single from the group’s forthcoming Jazz Is Dead 16: Featuring Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison album (available January 27th).
