30/70 – ART MAKE LOVE [LP]

The band 30/70 has established itself as a central group in the Melbourne-based neo-soul/nu-jazz scene, and their latest album is a testament to their incredible talents. The 11-track album, ART MAKE LOVE, is a joyous exploration of a pure sound, with the group’s deft electro-organic production setting them apart from many of their peers.

The project’s conceptual aim seems to be focused on the exploration of sound and the emotions that those sounds evoke. This approach allows the group to experiment with different genres and styles, resulting in a diverse range of tracks that are united by their infectious energy and unbridled creativity. Soul music, free jazz, and broken beat are just some of the disciplines that the group draws from on this album, creating a sound that is both familiar and entirely new. Tracks like “All 4 U and Without You, Within Me showcase the group’s ability to infuse their music with a future-funk/jazztronica flair, while super soulful burners like “Jay Luv” and “Acceptance” lend the album a slinky, funk-infused energy that is perfect for getting your body moving.

The group’s ability to blur musical lines to create a singular mood is also highlighted in tracks like “Holy Roller” and “U Betta Run,” which offer a healthy serving of mind-expanding experimentation toward the end of the LP. I would be neglectful if I didn’t comment on lead vocalist Allysha Joy‘s incredible performance at this point in this review. Joy‘s performance on this album is nothing short of heavenly. Her voice effortlessly shines on most of the album’s tracks, captivating listeners with its clarity and depth.

If one of the inspirations behind this album was to explore the strong connections and broad possibilities of electronic and jazz music, then Allysa and company have thoroughly succeeded in their mission. Even with all the creative twists and turns that 30/70 zig-zag through, they never lose their focus on creating an experience that both challenges and entertains listeners. ART MAKE LOVE is a great measure of the versatility that this band and the Melbourne music scene have to offer and is completely accessible to fans of all types of music.
