Martisté – Bachelor Tapes [EP]

Martiste’, a young hip-hop artist on the rise, has released his debut album Bachelor Tapes which features a mix of hip-hop and trap-soul stylings that let you step out of your day-to-day life for a bit and into the world of a playboy at large. The album has seven tracks that give listeners a taste of Martiste’s raspy voice, conversational flow, and bluntly direct lyrics as he offers up his thoughts on his life, longings, relationships, and more.

The first track, which is called “KTMP,” sets a pretty accurate tone for the entire album, with its swirling nocturnal melodies and rattling 808 drums creating an atmosphere of tense anticipation. Martiste’ lets his thoughts loose on everything from no-strings-attached flings to the pressures of balancing his ambitions with his personal relationships – all while keeping an unfazed player-pimp demeanor in his delivery. The second track, “Selfish,” carries a mellowed tone that’s similar to “KTMP” but feels a bit more focused as it has Martiste’ speaking on his unwavering dedication to his grind, even if it means sacrificing romantic relationships. There’s also a bit more fire in his voice on this track as talks about how he’s been putting in work and is ready to see the fruits of his efforts.

The rest of the album has a similar vibe to the first two tracks where we listen in as Martiste’ juggles his love of chasing his dreams with his love of chasing women while syrupy trap-steeped beats boom in the background. “Falling” and “Backseat” are two of my personal favorites on the album because they’re somewhat more energetic than some of the other cuts on the album and really showcase the draw of Martiste‘s charismatic devil-may-care personality.

All said Bachelor Tapes is an enjoyable listening experience from front to back. Martiste’ is a capable emcee who has a great ear for beats and knows how to create a recognizable sound for himself and has the potential to reach superstar status in the rap game depending on what opportunities he’s able to take advantage of in the future. This set features a combination of trap, laid-back hip-hop, and R&B elements that will appeal to fans of all three genres.
