Cleo Reed‘s debut album Root Cause explores intergenerational trauma and sacrifices through performances that guide the listener through her experiences of being observed, objectified, and assessed. The album is dedicated to her great-grandmother and her blues musician son, and draws inspiration from the Harlem Renaissance. The songs are pained but carry the truth with love, as Cleo seeks to tell tales that fall outside of the affluent and the gaze of the so-called norm.
