Creating a song can be a cathartic experience for many musicians, but it seems that for 7HO3NIX (pronounced “phoenix”) the process was especially profound. While traveling around the world in search of peace and purpose after the end of a romance, suffering career setbacks, and losing her mother, the singer poured all those emotions into writing a song that would turn out to be “It Is What It Is“. The result is a heartening, hip-hop soul number about resilience that is inspiring but nonetheless tinged with a bit of sadness. Yet 7HO3NIX (also known as Gabrielle Solange) doesn’t sound defeated.
