Denisse Takes x iD3 – Give It A Try [Single]

New sounds from L.A.’s own Denisse Takes by way of the independently released single “Give It A Try“ – a spoken-word poetry-styled hip-hop track that’s both soothing and inspiring. Produced by iD3 from Rennes, France, the cut is a chilled anthem of resilience and introspection – a sonic journey through the labyrinth of emotions brought on by the pandemic. 

Denisse delivers her rhymes and vocals in a cool, smoky contralto that’s subtly emotive as it swings between personal struggles and universal truths, all while pushing us to face our fears and lifting our spirits. She starts off by painting a picture of life before COVID shook the world, comparing it with our present-day isolation. Lines like “Fucked up situation / got the strongest on their knees” lay out the tough terrain that we’re all traveling through but hits especially hard when you remember that she writing from the perspective of an immunosuppressed organ transplant recipient. She makes her stand, though, hammering it home with “But not me, cause I don’t know the word defeat.”

iD3’s beat kicks off with a lone acoustic guitar, then layers in boom-bap drums and warm electric piano notes before adding a bluesy electric guitar halfway through. Meanwhile, Denisse‘s vocals move between chill bars and hushed yet expressive singing that underscores the song’s emotional weight.
