Diving headfirst into a world of wit and self-reflection, Rally 4 Reality‘s new EP, Woodcrest takes listeners on a wild ride peppered with humor and introspection. Drawing inspiration from the cult-favorite animated series The Boondocks, the three tracks – “Riley,” “Huey,” and “Jebediah” – brilliantly shows how well group members Tru Thoughts and S.I.N. can put together rhymes and lines that strike a chord with listeners as well as pick beats that’ll have you grinning and nodding your head.
The first track, “Riley,” is an unapologetically raw number in which the duo channels the spirit of the youngest and most outspoken member of the Freeman household. Despite the group’s seriousness in tackling themes of violence, loyalty, and respect—similar to that of the show itself—there is still a touch of tongue-in-cheek humor. Tru Thoughts starts the track with a grit-filled, street-disciple type verse that matches the heavy pounding beat laid out by producer Epik The Dawn. But before the verse draws to a close, you realize he’s speaking from the point of view of Riley and quickly starts revealing one of the characters main concerns – not getting his ass beat by Granddad. S.I.N. follows up with a verse spilling over with the character’s uncompromising stance, asserting his no-fucks-given attitude in all things and dropping a ton of black pop culture references. With a chorus that emphasizes self-reliance and moving stealthily in a world where trust is a luxury, the song takes listeners on a journey through the harsh realities of life in the streets, all while contrasting it with the low-stress suburban life Riley enjoys in Woodcrest.

Moving on to “Huey,” this track pores over the struggles of living in a world rife with deception, manipulation, and inequality. S.I.N. questions the reality we live in, lamenting the ease with which society can be manipulated, while Tru explores the frustration of being born into a rigged system and the senseless wars fought over power and wealth. Even the chorus serves as a stark reminder of the constant surveillance that we’ve all grown numb to, urging listeners to stay vigilant, adapt, and persevere.
Lastly, “Jebediah” offers a reflective, sample-driven gem about family, nostalgia, and the pursuit of a better life. The laid-back atmosphere, driven by a low-end heavy, rolling bass line and soulful vocal samples, sets the stage for Rally 4 Reality to delve into the experiences of older generations. Like Robert Freeman, they dream about living a simple kind of life, free from strife and stress and enjoying regular rides to nowhere in particular in an old black Caddy. A clip from the show closes the album, adding a touch of nostalgia and humor before the album fades out. And as the journey through Woodcrest comes to an end, it’s evident that Rally 4 Reality has cooked up an EP that will be enjoyed by many. The duo laces wit self-reflection, and humor into their lyrics, while also selecting beats that knock. So while it clocks in at just a few tracks, this outstanding set still packs a punch and is absolutely worth your time and attention.
