The innovative New Zealand collective Fat Freddy’s Drop delivers yet another stellar piece with their single “Blackbird (KINGS Remix).” This body-moving remix features a sophisticated blend of funk-infused hip-hop, reggae, and captivating lyricism. Teaming up with the talented New Zealand producer/emcee, KINGS, the fusion of energetic rap verses and immersive funk make this reimagining of the original title track from their 2013 album simply irresistible. The picture of blackbirds amassing in a garden is beautifully penned in as a metaphor, subtly painting the scene of how worries and fears can silently increase. And like the uninvited blackbirds, these can slowly build up, to the point where they become all-consuming and taking away our peace of mind.

The vibrant reggae-style energy is masterfully combined with a hint of chic funk while KINGS‘ dynamic rap flow breathes passion into the song, adding a sense of urgency and unease. While the anxiety swirls, group frontman Dallas Tamaira serenades listeners with his suave and mellifluous voice, offering calmness in the midst of rising tension.

The band fire up their own little symphony, building up a musical oasis — lush and plush.
