Trip Carter – Money & Water [Single]

Trip Carters “Money & Water” drips with sun-drenched, West Coast cool, mixing mellow grooves with cutting bars. Co-produced by Carter along with fellow beatmaker/arranger Lasik, the track dives right into the pitiless world of privilege, social scrutiny, and some black self-care.

Carter‘s swagger is instantly apparent: “Came in fly / 323 to the 305 / I don’t never leave on time / Cuz I gotta hit at least once more time.” It’s a lyrical postcard from LA to Miami by way of nonchalant bravado and casual cool. He’s slick with the pen too, punching in lines like, “Summer never over / Rich niggas don’t see wintertime,” which pits the never-ending summer of success against the brutal winters a bottomless bank account can mask.

TIn a chorus that would double as the ultimate modern mantra in hustle culture, it repeats quite simply: “Get your money / Drink your water / Mind your business.” A barefaced reminder of why putting yourself first takes precedence over the empty voices of critics. Trip also proves to be an astute life observer with bars like,, “Go to college / What’s your major / Hipster hypocrite in training,” poking fun at societal standards but in the know.

On the second verse, Carter sifts deeper into his story with unflinching detail, speaking about his come-up almost photographically: “I stay outside / Born in the city where they bang outside,” and “Show money I’m a showman / Making Otani show dollars.” It is a product of that dope boy dream – to make something out of nothing. From start to finish, his “Money & Water” is a standout: as slick as a Venice Beach sunset, with lyrics that juggle humor and tough love.
