Artichoke FM – Altered States [Single]

 Artichoke FM, the Leeds-based production duo made up of Gio and Odam, hit us with “Altered States,” a gem from their album, Remote Polygraph. This instrumental feels like the soundtrack to a movie moment when everything clicks for the main character. It’s not overly dramatic but has a vibe of something ending and a fresh start on the horizon.

The drums lay down a steady, almost military beat, taking you back to the trip-hop sounds of the 90s. It’s a solid “boom-bap-boom-boom-bap” that anchors the track. The bass notes are deep, giving off a warm, rich tone like an upright bass. Synth strings float above, clear and shimmering, adding an almost ghostly layer. Looping softly, the melodica’s warm and reedy melody is a balm for the mind, leading you into a pensive state.  

“Altered States” isn’t just background noise; it invites you to think deeply, perfect for those late-night sessions with something mellow to sip or puff on. Its sentimental and heavy tones make it an almost purifying experience. Gio and Odam definitely flex their skill for creating a sound that’s a little bit otherworldly but also still grounded on this one.
