The ’80s are definitely having a moment. “Hide” is the second track to come across my desk that feels like it should be the centerpiece of an ’80s movie soundtrack—think Flashdance or Fame. This combo, however, of singer Francis On My Mind and producer/arranger diandian do a much better job of keeping things interesting. There is just enough of the unexpected to make it a satisfying nod to the era without falling into complete throwback territory. I really like the lyrics and their depth, touching on the themes of finding yourself, peeling off the mask we all wear, and learning to love yourself – all set to a fast-paced dance pop beat. Francis’ voice surges with a rebellious edge that never loses its power against the effervescent dance-pop beat. Even when she croons in a warm, lower register, her energy cuts through like a shot of espresso in a sea of sugary sweetness—an impressive feat from this promising Europop star
