STOUT proves herself to be unafraid of vulnerability with the song “Under” [Single + Video]

Expressing vulnerability is not my strong suit. In fact, I feel pretty confident saying that it’s no one’s strong suit. Given a choice between feeling confident and secure or disarmed and expose, I’m going with the former 101% of the time. And while that decision seems like a no-brainer, life quickly teaches us that it isn’t always the right answer. At some point, each of us has to let down our guard and show someone what’s really going on behind that purposely crafted game-face. And while I know that to be true, I am notorious for my inability to ask for help. No matter how bad the situation, no matter how long I’ve been drowning in the deep end, I will not hesitate to give the people around me a disingenuous “I’m fine” and a half-hearted smile. I think this stoic quirk of mine is why I found myself so drawn to the words and imagery of the video “Under” from vocalist Denise Renee “STOUT” Stoudmire.

Taken from the Connecticut-bred singer’s most recent album – the Highs and Lows EP – the melancholic single allows STOUT to tap into pained emotions and reveal them to a larger audience with swelling emotional grandeur. She is honest in how she sizes up her feelings and unguarded in her cries for help. It is impossible (or at least it is for me) to not be moved by the track’s lyrics. And the evocative video that goes with the tune proves that the gifted performer doesn’t have a problem laying her emotions bare in front of the camera.
