So as I’m sitting at home listening to the track “Pull Up (Remix)” from the alt-soul duo Bathe, I can’t help but find myself struck by the song’s interesting shifts in perspective. The song opens with a very laid-back smoker inviting a friend to come out to a get-together and have a good time. And while you would be blameless in expecting the rest of the song to follow suit, singer Dev Hobdy switches roles for the first verse – changing from sedate smoker inviting a friend to “pull up” to the function to a slightly more anxious invitee who clearly feels out of place at the party-like scene. This shift, however, is only noticeable if you’re paying close attention to the lyrics because Dev maintains a mesmerizingly cool vibe in his delivery no matter which character he happens to be voicing. Guest emcee Mick Jenkins adds a different point of view to the song – that of someone who is more comfortable and confident in his skin as he spits his game to a pretty young partygoer. With all that said, you don’t need to follow these plot threads to enjoy this vibey summertime anthem from a duo that has put in an early bid for “coolest summertime anthem of 2022”.
