This is exactly what I found myself enjoying so much about his single “The Truth”.
The British singer conjures up a bluesy, Northern Soul spell and casts it over his audience on the bittersweet single. Instead of sounding mournful as he accepts the truths of a soured love affair, our leading man sounds charged up by the pain of his heartbreak. “I guess [The Truth is] about losing people. Time cannot soothe some forms of loss.” the singer writes as he offers up some details of the single’s message. “It’s about facing the truth of the underlying situation, which is that ultimately time is slipping by, and we are all moving toward the only inevitable thing, which is death. We will lose it all in time.” Strange as it may sound, the single itself is a lot more rousing than its underlying message. The hip-hop-meets-blues-rock vibe of the tune carries its animated flourishes like a well-loved bar song as Joe clambers out of any funk that he may have been in and bares his soul in the spotlight without fear. If this is a song about dealing with existential challenges, then Average Joe and the band The Rules are showing us all how to wield our talents like weapons in the face of pain and regret.
