Spiritualists don’t always get the respect that they deserve. Bringing up phenomena associated with things like sage burning, crystals, elixirs, and mystical energy can get you tons of raised eyebrows and sideways stares from most people. If I’m being completely honest, I’m one of those people…up to a point. Generally, I base almost all of my decisions on evidence and proven methods, but I’m also superstitious. If I’m enjoying a little downtime at my day job in the ER and you say “Man, it’s kinda quiet in here” it will take a lot of effort on my part not to slap the piss out of you. So while I don’t own any crystals and I’ve never taken part in a sage smudging ritual, I absolutely believe in the tangible effects of unknown forces. And it seems that the Australian based nu-soul duo Planetself – which is made up of soulful vocalist Charli Umami and MPC maestro Inkswel – places even more weight on the presence and power of spiritual energies as evidenced by their newest single “Leylines”.
If you’re not too familiar with the concept of “ley-lines”, they can be roughly described as a network of alignments that connect both naturally occurring and manmade landmarks. Many people believe that these lines carry along with them streams of natural energies that can affect things like growth and temperament in living things. Keeping that in mind, its easy to experience a deeper connection to the vibes and colors of the natural world as guided by the chilled brilliance of this track. Charli has a sweetly angelic voice that unhurriedly navigates the simple theme of tapping into something greater than ourselves. Her voice soothes as she speaks about healing and hope and the restless rush that comes with being a seeker. Her partner Ilkswel complements this message with a hazily drifting horn section and lo-fi drums that are ordered into cool, loosely syncopated rhythms. The pair emphasizes the song’s connection to the planet: “ ‘Leylines’ actually was written after Charli visited a friend’s house in the far south of Adelaide. The house itself is situated on three ley-lines and is known as a very significant spiritual place in regional Adelaide. This sparked her interest into the concept of ley-lines (which are called ‘song-lines’ in the local indigenous community)”. The tune also becomes a sun-drenched sketch courtesy of the band and cinematographer Jimblah as they travel to specific locations around their native Adelaide to soak in and convey the energy inherent in each spot.
Whether you count yourself as a believer in the existence of ley-lines or a skeptic, there’s no denying the laid-back, reaffirming energy that radiates from “Leylines” the song. While it’s hard to measure, it’s easy to enjoy if you’re willing to let it flow directly into that part of you that can be deeply affected by music. All you need to do is press play and enjoy.
