By anyone’s standard, Uptown XO is a mesmerizing emcee. His new album, Culture Over Corporate, vol. 3, is masterfully laid out – matching his insightful lines and zigzag flow with a fresh batch of dusty-digital beats from renowned producer/emcee/band-mate Oddisee. The Washington DC rep lets thoughts flow from his mind in an unfiltered way that would surely feel like some MUM’s styled spoken-word poetry if he or his label ever decided to put out an acapella version of this album. Top picks from the album include the bluesy and bumpin’ opening anthem “I’m Home”; an amped-up celebration of growth and change called “Dreams”; a number called “Love Addict” that finds XO taking a sec to speak to a toxic love from his past in order to get some shit off his chest; and respectful critique of the generational beefs that too often build up in hip-hop called “The Great Debate”.

This is an album that I will be telling all of my friends about. It is a set that I am hard-pressed to find anything to complain about beyond a few trivial nitpicks or annoyances. It may even be the best album of the year and certainly in the top 10.
