New music from singer Liv McLean via the single “New Pair of Eyes” – an unhurried and powerfully hitting soul piece that sings of gaining a renewed strength in the midst of difficult times. Over heavy-landing rhythms and overcast strings, Liv encourages us to show kindness to ourselves by shifting our focus away from the sea of troubles that lie ahead of us so that we can hone in on the positivity around us. In her own words, McLean notes that “ ‘New Pair of Eyes’ is based on shifting your perspective and rather than focusing on all the difficulties one might face, finding something positive to focus on to get out of a negative headspace”. While listening to her sweetly gravelly soprano I kept picturing the singer belting out her notes towards a dark and stormy sky until the clouds gave way to a rising dawn. Liv’s voice is blessed with a beautifully raspy patina and her impassioned performance on this single has her readily jetting between the lowest lows and the highest highs of her range. It must be said that one of two of her big belting high notes take on a bit of a screamy quality. But I think that they’re saved by the fact that it shows just how committed she is to grounding her music in something raw and emotional.
