Yuphoric & Sedric Perry – Changes [EP]

Changes is a five-track album from the band Yuphoric that features vocalist Sedric Perry on every track. Landing somewhere between Columbia Nights and Brent Faiyaz, this an album where listeners will enjoy the majority of the tracks on a first-pass listen and still find them compelling years later.

Opening number “Changes” has a dynamic ebb and flow to its breezy vibe – telling a relatable story of how nice (and necessary) it is to get away from it all in order to practice a little self-care. Have a smoke, sip on a nice brandy, take in some beautiful scenery – whatever helps you decompress. The original mix of Don’t Leave Me on Read” is a sublimely sweet offering that feels like the sort of thing that Robin Thicke would cover when he’s deep in his jazzy-soul bag. The detailed instrumental touches from instrumentalists Yuval Gantz and Phon meld together with Sedric‘s dazzling tenor in such an impressive way on this track. The brass section flourishes during the chorus are also a real treat to the ears. The song is followed up by a sparser, more futuristic-feeling Don’t Leave Me on Read (Moods Remix)that makes beautiful use of a bubbling synths, plush bass notes, and airtight rimshots. Lyrically both version detail the same nerve-wracking back & forth of an on-again-off-again love affair. But to the band’s credit, each version manages to bring a unique rendering to the table. So much so that they feel like two completely different songs if you’re not paying close attention.

Unbreakable Habits is a light and dreamlike trek through the sky with Sedric sounding blissfully content with his addiction to that special guy in his life. Get Away” offers a bit more of a pulsating house-music enthusiasm to the album with its neon traced keyboards swinging in and out of focus over punchy disco drums. This closing number revisits the theme of escaping our everyday lives that was touched on in album opener “Changes”. While that definitely closes the circular flow of the EP, “Get Away” centers on a couple taking flight to some far-off destination while “Changes” focuses on one person going on a restorative sabbatical. The album closer also has a more energetic thump to it and leaves the album on something of an exciting cliffhanger.

Yuphoric & Sedric Perry‘s Changes is a unique album as it presents five solid tracks with some of the most consistent production I’ve heard in years. The mix of seductive sounds mixed with the soulful voice of Sedric Perry makes for an immersive listening experience.
