“Mastermind” from jazz guitarist/producer Tiny Anthem and Baltimore-based emcee Juice Bruns is an excellent example of jazzy-rap done right. It works well when listened to on its own merits but is also an interesting fusion of hip-hop and jazz along the lines of Guru’s work during his “Jazzamatazz” era. The song explores the life lessons learned by an endeavoring artist and reflects on what it takes to remain inspired while navigating everyday living. Tiny Anthem creates a bouncy-yet-breezy musical backdrop with his guitar-laden production and Juice counters the George Benson-ish mellowness of the beat with a rhythmically crisp flow that dances nimbly with every bar spit.
“Mastermind” is the debut release from Tiny Anthem & Juice Brun as a duo, but it won’t be the last. The pair are working on an EP and plan to release another single in the next month or so.
