New sights and sounds from Ella Mai with the release of the video for the single “DFMU (Don’t Fxck Me Up)” – a heartfelt ballad that’s written from the perspective of a woman who has fallen deeply and dangerously in love with a man and now finds herself struggling with her fears of having her heart broken. Ella Mai does a wonderful job of word painting as she describes her innermost thoughts and feelings over a beautiful and almost haunting trap-soul melody. And while the song can be seen as romantic or ominous depending on your perspective, the Loris Russier-directed video puts a heavy emphasis on the darker nature of an all-encompassing love affair. In the vid, our couple end an affectionate night on the town by running their car into a lake and allowing themselves to sink into the dark depths below. Eventually our heroine makes a break from both her lover and the car and swims towards the surface to save herself, but the imagery may be triggering for some…so be warned. All of that said, “DFMU” is a wonderfully honest song and video that packs a potent emotional punch.
