The single “Lyrical Doses” might be considered “lo-fi” by today’s standards, but this bright and breezy gem from Canadian emcee TARiiiQ has a bit more octane in its tank than most of the uber-chill offerings from the genre. This jazzy head-nodder has more in common with KOD era J.Cole than it does the warm buzzing sounds pioneered by artists like Nujabes and Knxwledge, and that’s mainly due to TARiiiQ‘s snappy-yet-slick delivery. The “Make A Sound” emcee isn’t afraid to show his lyrical dexterity, peppering the beat with punchy flows and witty bars that will have you marveling at his ability to spit bars that are both technical and accessible. The laidback jazz samples lend the track an easygoing vibe, but it’s TARiiiQ‘s sharp flow that elevates it above so many other songs in the same vein. “Lyrical Doses” is a treat for the ears and a welcome relief from the sameness that plagues so many of hip-hop’s up-and-coming artists. It’s also a great entry point to TARiiiQ‘s ever-growing body of work.
