When I tell you that Nea & The Regulars is one of the most exciting nu-soul/jazz-funk bands I’ve discovered in recent years, it’s no exaggeration. Their vibrant spin on soul, funk, and jazz music has been consistently met with positive reactions from fans and critics alike. “Opaline“, the band’s second single to drop in the past few months, is likely to garner just as much positive attention as their quirky debut single “Snake Eye Popsicle” did last year. This latest release, which is destined to become a fan favorite from the band’s forthcoming album Cosmic Inconvenience, is a brightly lit yet emotionally resonant melody that celebrates the blissed-out joy of new love. The elated and uplifting feel that the song is meant to instill is masterfully conveyed through its springy jazz-funk production, as well as lead singer/guitarist Karin Baadsvik‘s sweetly raspy vocals. Nea & The Regulars have quickly hit their stride with “Opaline”, and it’s pretty clear that they have a great deal to offer the music world with their upcoming full-length album. I am really excited to hear more music from this band and I am looking forward to seeing how they further expand upon their sound and explore the possibilities of their genre-blending style.
And on a side note, shout out to whoever’s responsible for the beautifully bizarre cover art that features the band’s keyboardist, Nesset Elstad. It really brought back memories of that surreal cut-out art style that was made famous by Terry Gilliam/Monty Python and was used in the intro of the show You Can’t Do That On Television.
