Producer/arranger Homage CVG advances the cause of steering the beattape scene back to its sonically rich and cinematically-steeped origins with his newest instrumental effort, the Unfortunately LP. Although the album’s beginnings are rooted in a series of personal disappointments as experienced by the Cincinnati based sound-scientist, the set feels like less of a trek through another person’s sadness and more like a dynamic soundtrack from a 70’s sound library…or a more thematically focused entry in Madlib‘s “Medicine Show” instrumental series. Standout entries include a heavy stomping and shadowy theme called “This Is Known As a Conflict of Interest“; a bit of metamorphing psych-rock-meets-hip-hop nimbleness called “It Looks LIke Rain“; some staccato jazz strumming in the form of the track “And It Pains Me To Say“; and an uprocking slice of sample heavy drum funk called “No One Knows What They Are“. “This album represents a time when the word [unfortunately] seemed to be echoed in chorus to me, crushingly so at times. Rather than internalize my feelings of despair and hopelessness I felt at the time, I wanted to showcase the inherent human quality of disappointment and all the flexible ways it is delivered to us.” –
